Program Highlights

Operating under the core values of servant leadership, community building and social change, the Leadership Knoxville Scholars Program will focus on educating selected high-achieving juniors and seniors to lead and serve in the Knoxville community using the following curriculum as a guideline.

2014-2015 Curriculum:

Fall Semester
  • Participate in a “welcome ceremony” with community and campus leaders on August 21, 2014 beginning at 3:00PM.
  • Complete a 3 credit-hour Leadership Seminar Class featuring an overview of leadership theory and the practical applications of leadership on campus and in the community which takes place on TR 11:10-12:25.
  • Attend a “Leadership Scholars” weekend retreat focused on strengths development, service and developing community on September 12-14, 2014 in Crossville, TN.
  • Participate in a workshop held jointly with Career Services and the Center for Leadership and Service to identify local employment opportunities and internship opportunities to explore before and after graduation.
  • Develop a Community Action Project (CAP) with fellow cohort members that would focus on creating a vision for positive change for the Knoxville community.
  • Attend semester meetings with the Leadership Knoxville Scholars advisor to track student progress and connect students to local resources.
Spring Semester
  • Meet with an assigned community leader mentor and shadow them for 2-4 hours per semester.
  • Participate in monthly roundtable discussions to discuss leadership trends, opportunities and individual goals taking place every Tuesday from 4:00-5:00PM.
  • Participate in the one-day Catalyst, retreat experience, a national leadership training program on February 21, 2015.
  • Participate in a Day of Service to the Knoxville community.
  • Attend semester meetings with the Leadership Scholars advisor to track student progress and connect students to local resources.
Summer 2015
  • Serve as LKS student mentor during a 5-day leadership program for Knoxville high school juniors.

2015-2016 Curriculum:

Fall Semester
  • Participate in a leadership workshop with leaders from the Knoxville community.
  • Meet with an assigned community leader mentor and shadow them for 2-4 hours per semester.
  • Participate in an Alternative Fall Break experience
  • Participate in monthly roundtable discussions every Thursday from 4:00-5:00PM to discuss leadership trends, opportunities and individual goals.
  • Attend semester meetings with the Leadership Scholars advisor to track student progress and connect students to local resources.
Spring Semester
  • Enroll in the Leadership Knoxville Scholars Senior capstone course taking place on Mondays from 2:30-4:25, featuring guest instructors from the local community.
  • Finalize Community Action Project (CAP) with fellow cohort members and give presentation to local community leaders.
  • Participate in a Day of Service to the Knoxville community.
  • Meet with an assigned community leader mentor and shadow them for 2-4 hours per semester
  • Participate in semester meetings with the Knoxville Leadership Scholars advisor to track student progress and connect students to local resources.
  • Participate in a closing recognition ceremony featuring community leaders and mentors to celebrate the conclusion of the program.
