What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?

Our “Scruffy Little City” is maturing. As we work together to continue thoughtful, bold-but-responsible growth, we will emerge as one of the Southeast’s most appealing cities. We will continue to take advantage of our natural resources, and to promote diversity and equality. In ten years, Knoxville will be the same City we all know and love today, but wiser, stronger, and more equitable. Knoxville is hitting its prime.

What are you reading that is on your nightstand?

Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan, Range by David Epstein

What is your favorite Knoxville memory?

UT vs. Florida overtime victory in 1998. The adrenaline of sitting in the student section, then storming onto the field to get my very own piece of the lawn in Neyland Stadium. Watching the goalposts go down. Whoo-hoo! Go Vols!

What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?

“Even when you are eager, don’t always be the first to talk.” From my brother, Jimmy Rodefer.

What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?

Do things that are uncomfortable because that’s the only way to expand your comfort zone. It’s not all about you. Don’t get caught up on details that don’t matter. Tone it down on the hair spray and the bangs. Trust your gut. Never stop learning. Do not underestimate yourself or anyone else. Many times, it’s better to be kind than to be right. Shhh – listen more. Spend more time with your dad and your step-dad, and your grandparents. Take time for self-care. Don’t use Irish Spring soap. Just don’t. Don’t quit piano lessons. You still have a lot to learn, even though you think you know it all. Learn what you are good at and do those things well. Don’t let what you can’t do bog you down – get creative and ask for help. Learn Spanish while your brain is still good. Go see Tom Petty, Aretha Franklin, and John Prine. Listen to your mother.
