What is your favorite Knoxville memory?

Attending Boomsday with family and friends was always a great way to celebrate the end of summer, offering a pleasant evening with thousands from the Knoxville area to enjoy the sights and sounds of outstanding fireworks displays.

What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?

Dr. Michael Martin, a colleague and friend during our time at Oregon State University, once stated that “You don’t have to be a dog to judge a dog show.” I’ve thought about that a lot, and believe it challenges each of us to do our best and achieve our goals regardless of our backgrounds or experiences. Our past does not limit our possibilities.

What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?

Time is a precious commodity, and time with family is even more valuable. There will always be more work to do, but family members will not always be present — enjoy time with them and don’t sacrifice relationships with family members for marginally important work responsibilities. Do your job and be present at work when it is critical, but be a good grandson, son, father, and grandfather too and remember that phones, tablets and computers have an off switch.
