16 Dec Youth Leadership class completes Inaugural summer camp
“Thirty-one high school students comprise the first Youth Leadership Knoxville class, a program of Leadership Knoxville; and they recently completed their first summer camp. Team building skills and class introductions were the focus of Monday’s session at the University of Tennessee which was led by U.T.’s Center for Leadership Development. On Tuesday, the class gathered at the Knoxville Chamber for activities to learn about downtown Knoxville and then made their way to the City County building to meet with leaders in both city and county governments, including: Deputy Mayor Christi Branscom, LK’09, Deputy Mayor Bill Lyons, LK’03, County Mayor Chief of Staff Dean Rice, LK’10, Police Chief David Rausch, LK’11, and Knoxville Chamber Sr. Vice President Rhonda Rice, LK’03.
On Wednesday, the class gathered at the Knox County Health Department, and then toured East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, followed by an afternoon session at the Police Training Academy.
On Thursday, “Media and Communication” was the focus of the day held at the campus of sponsor Pellissippi State Community College. The week concluded with an emphasis on “Arts and Culture” with visits to both the Knoxville Museum of Art and the Clarence Brown Theater. Michael Strickland, LK’06, CEO of Bandit Lites, served as the send-off speaker to the class with an inspiring testimony of perseverance and hard work. The class will be off during the month of August and will resume the program schedule in September.
